The end of summer means a lot of people are returning to school or work from their summer vacations. Coming from a relaxing state to a stress-filled environment can be difficult to adjust to. Two herbs that are great for reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation are Lavender and Chamomile.

Chamomile is one of the most widely used relaxing nervine herbs in the Western world. It aids the mind by relaxing and toning the nervous system, making it a useful herb for anxiety and tension throughout the entire body. It also acts as an antispasmodic*, nervine*, carminative*, and anti-inflammatory herb.  It is safe to use for anxious children by adding to their bathwater. This herb also makes a wonderful late-night tea to ensure a restful sleep.

Lavender is a nervine specialist. This wonderful herb promotes natural sleep and relieves headaches promoted by stress. This herb also acts as a nervine*, antidepressant, carminative*, and antispasmodic*. It may be used to treat states of nervous debility and exhaustion which is great for combating depression and mood swings.

Lavender and Chamomile are similar in many ways, so they are great to combine for a boost of each other’s properties. Even though these herbs are great sedatives and stress relievers, they also support the immune system and skin aliments.

Some of our products that contain Lavender, or Chamomile are Grandma’s Hands Cocoa Butter, Honey Lavender Salve, Sensitive Skin Salve and Relaxation Root Tea Blend.

*Carminative – herbs that relieve gas from the stomach or intestines; abdominal pain or distension (such as nervous butterflies)
*Antispasmodic – herbs that relieve spasm and cramps of involuntary muscles; stomach and bladder
*Nervine – herbs that soothe the nerves and relieve the nervous system.
